2017 Photography year. A year with a difference

2017 Photography Year

2017 was a photographic year with a difference. They say diversity is a good thing and this past year has certainly been diverse. I’ve always been a forward-looking person and believe the past is best left there. But, it’s typical of photographers to look back and show a small collection of their favourite images each New Year. So, I undertook the same exercise and stumbled onto a startling realisation. 2017 was the first year since 1994 that I’ve not taken a single wildlife photograph. Not one.

After a short bout of regret and self-pity, I fired up Lightroom to see what the hell I had been photographing last year. What a joyous exercise that proved to be. 2017 was always going to be a tough year photography wise as I focused heavily on my writing and publishing. Read more about those 2017 successes here

Below are some of the results of what proved to be an extraordinary photographic year. I’ve split them into different genres and projects because each has a unique story.

Street and Urban Work

Observation and voyeurism are natural things for curious humans. I’ve never met a single person who doesn’t like to people-watch, wondering what others lives might be like. Street Photography has long been a passion of mine, although I’ve never really shared it until 2017.

Being on the street may seem like a lonely pursuit, but you’re never alone. There is always a multitude of things happening so finding the subjects to focus on takes time. Time spent walking. I can’t tell you how many hundreds of miles I trudged last year, but it was worth it.

I’m still working on thousands of images that I took but here are some of my favourites.

Travel Work

By the sheer nature of the work that Anneli and I do, we’re always travelling somewhere. Both local and international trips usually mean a mixture of travel, weddings, destination or street photography can be covered on a weekly basis.

This year, we were lucky enough to make two epic road trips (still to be edited and published). We spend three weeks travelling the east coast of Australia, covering Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and many miles in-between. The second trip was to the USA (our third large road trip to the US). We drove up from a wedding in supercool Nashville, via Pennsylvania, and onto New York. All travel photography heaven.

Sandwiched in between these trips, I visited Tuscany in Italy. This was to help Anneli on a styled shoot at a fantastic Tuscan vineyard. Some Chianti might have been consumed.

A Photographic Partner

With all the travel and wedding destinations that, Anneli Marinovich Photography, does each year, it proved great fun to second-shoot a few of the weddings with her. This was a challenge for someone as introverted as myself, but we had a blast.

Having a photographic partner makes life so much easier even if our genres aren’t always aligned. Creativity transcends all art forms, so we have a great time whether on location in a foreign land, scouting around an old country estate, or shooting a wedding on New Year’s Eve. Looking forward to many more.

New creative journeys are in the pipeline for both of us in 2018. I’ll still be focused on the writing but changing genres as I come to the end of one of my published series. I’ll also be spending more time on my wildlife drawing with the view to sell some work at a later date. Anneli is working on more personal branding shoots for 2018. Along with this, she’s been a machine on her fitness journey, and this has allowed us to play with a little fitness photography.

Ongoing Projects

I have a few ongoing photography projects at the moment, and I share three of them in 2017 below.

The Creative Space Project

A project that I launched last year to photograph creative folks in the areas where they work and play

The Walk-on-By Project

A street photography project where I look for colourful backgrounds and photograph people walking in front of the lens.

Black and White Street

I’m not as great a fan of Black-and-White photography as most street photographers are. I simply love colour and decay too much to want to convert images to monochrome. But, here are some that I felt worked with a little change.

There are simply too many images to share from all the different projects, but please take a look at any of the above that may interest you.

All the best for 2018

Finally, from me to you. Best wishes for 2018. I hope you exceed all your wishes and dreams.
