All weather creatures

So what did I learn from all the years of photographing in Bushy Park? Come rain, sun or snow, one of the first things you’ll realise about watching and photographing wildlife is that it’s all constantly changing. They don’t take breaks from their natural behaviour because of foul weather. They’re constantly following their instinctive wildlife cycles, and for you to take good photographs, you need to be out there, not sat indoors waiting for sunshine.

Having a few areas that you visit regularly will lead to an abundance of photo opportunities you would not encounter with a once-off visit. It’s only logical, but people do fail to realise it. They drive for miles to a national or local park, and if they don’t immediately see anything worth photographing, they don’t go again. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been told that there’s nothing to see in a park or on a certain road, only for me to go and get photos I like.

We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time.

Bushy Park

One of my regular patches is Bushy Park, within the Greater London area. Many a time, I’ve arrived at dawn, walked to a few of my regular spots and waited, only to witness natural behaviour that I’ve not captured before. That is, in essence, what we should all be trying to achieve with our wildlife and nature photography. Capturing as much of the species’ life cycle as possible.

On any given Saturday, there are always a few photographers in the park, and I’m amazed at how much mileage they cover, stopping briefly to get a photo and then moving on to the next species. Most of them, I only ever see once, so I hope they got the shots that they planned. The key tip is to find a few great patches close to where you live and work them often.
