Great Cities – New Orleans
Hot on the heels of the last great city, Barcelona, comes a joint-favourite of mine, the city of New Orleans.
“We wander through old streets, and pause before the age stricken houses; and, strange to say, the magic past lights them up.” – Grace King, French Quarter Guidebook
Situated in the southern US state of Louisiana, It’s a city that grabs you by the soul, and never let’s go. Honed from a tough, colourful past, the vibrancy and warmth of the residents transcend its history to give you, the traveller, one of the warmest welcomes out there.
My first visit was with my wife, Anneli, as part of our southern US road trip. We enjoyed the four days we spent there so much so, we’re returning again this year to dig below the surface of a place that gave us such photographic enjoyment.
Whether it was the crazy neon-lit Bourbon Street, the more authentic experience of Frenchmen Street, or the grandiose houses in the Garden District, there is something there for everyone. And a little more for travel photographers.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page” – St Augustine
I seriously cannot wait for October when we will be back in this vibrant city. Fantastic post and great photos Mr M!
Amen to that. Bring on that Ghost tour.
