Gnu in the Rain

Gnu in the Rain

This photo of the Blue Wildebeest or Gnu was taken on a really miserable day in Kruger National Park in South Africa. It put paid to the notion that animals go about their business regardless of the weather. This ‘clown’ of the savannah was unusually subdued, wet and just stood feeling sorry for himself.

In this low light, the Canon Mk4 proved once again what a fantastic camera it was. There is almost no noise (film grain) visible at an ISO of 3200. I used a beanbag on the window of the car o added stability.

The colours on the day were muted and dull thanks to the weather. I was always shooting this image with black-and-white conversion in mind.

For more images of this crazy species, take a look at some of the action from my trip to the Masai Mara. This annual event ins Kenya showcases this monster migration of wildebeest and zebra.
