Day trip to Positano

Travel photography in Positano

Positano

Last year, I found myself on the Amalfi coast again where I was second shooting a wedding for the talented Anneli Marinovich Photography.  The joy of travelling together is that we’re always keen to experience a little more of the country that we’re shooting in. It doesn’t take much effort to plan two or three extra days before the wedding to explore. After checking into our Airbnb in Sorrento, we needed to scout the locations where the wedding was being held. After that, the decision was made to head across the mountains to the small town of Positano.

We parked just outside the town in one of those places where you hand over the keys and hope your car is there when you return. The wind swirling around the cliffs was the only thing cooling us down as we walked along the narrow roads that run above the town. Needing some respite, we turned down a small lane and wandered into a maze of small alleys of shops and, more importantly, places serving ice cream.

Anneli was doing a couple shoot in the town, and once we’d met up with the couple, we all made our way down to the main beach, shooting along the way. Positano is a wonderful place to visit, but I wouldn’t stay there for more than a weekend. There are just so many other places to see along the coast.

John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano in Harper’s Bazaar in May 1953. “Positano bites deep”, Steinbeck wrote. “It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.”
